“JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A bicyclist was hit by an SUV on Thursday morning near the entrance of Mandarin High School on Greenland Road about 6:30 a.m. The person on the bicycle, who police have not identified, was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center by ambulance.
The victim’s condition was not released, but traffic homicide detectives were sent to investigate.Witnesses told Channel 4 that the victim was a 15-year-old cross-country runner who was riding to Mandarin High School for a practice.
That witness said the boy turned into traffic to cross Greenland Road to get to the school. “I’m coming up the light and I see the boy, and he just pulls out instead of stopping,” John Mack told Channel 4’s Tarik Minor. “He probably thought the car would stop, but the car just kept coming and hit him.”
While school does not begin until Monday, Mack said the crossing lights at the intersection were flashing. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Sgt. R.A. Harville said it was too early to say if the driver would face any charges. The eastbound lanes of Greenland reopened just after 11 a.m.
